Ombudsman Velislava Delcheva greeted the participants in the two-day forum Euro Days at UNWE organized by the Institute of Economics and Policies with the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) and the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB).
In her speech Velislava Delcheva emphasized that the discussion on Bulgaria’s accession to the Eurozone is primarily about trust – trust in institutions, in government decisions and in society itself.
“The adoption of the Euro is not just an economic step but also a profound social change. This change affects everyone – from the pensioner who keeps an eye on the price movements in the store to the young entrepreneur who thinks about investment and development,” the Ombudsman said.
Velislava Delcheva emphasized that her mission as Ombudsman is to put the individual into the center of the government policy and to make sure that the voice of citizens will be heard, that their concerns will be taken seriously and that the institutions’ decisions will be explained with transparency and respect.
“What is needed is honest communication, clear-set guarantees against abuse and active social support for vulnerable groups in this uneasy process of accession to the Eurozone. I believe that this is the only way to keep trust which is the most valuable asset in our society,” Velislava Delcheva said further.
As she put it, with joint efforts Bulgaria can transform the process of the adoption of the Euro into a social contract on justice and stability and not simply into an economic reform.
The forum participants were greeted by the Rector of the University of National and World Economy Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, the Deputy Executive Director of the Dutch-Belgian constituency at the International Monetary Fund Marnix van Rij, the Deputy Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank Petar Chobanov, the President of the Economic and Social Council Zornitsa Roussinova and the Chairperson of the Executive Board of the Association of Banks in Bulgaria (ABB) Petia Dimitrova.
