Ombudsman Velislava Delcheva presented the award to BNT journalist Maya Dimitrova at the “Distinguished Bulgarians” ceremony, organised for the 23rd consecutive year by 24 Chasa media outlet.
The award was presented for the documentaries “Chernobyl: 40 Years Later” and “Architects of Chaos,” which highlight the importance of accurate information and the consequences of concealing or distorting it.
“Your documentaries about Chernobyl and “Architects of Chaos” remind us that the truth is vital. Because when it is concealed or distorted, the consequences are severe for each and every one of us. In one case, it is the environment that is polluted, causing illness and claiming lives; in the other, it is the information landscape. And you bring a breath of fresh air—through facts, professionalism, and the courage to stand up for them,” said Delcheva.
The Ombudsman also highlighted the report “Psychiatric Hospitals on the Verge of Disappearance,” which brings the problems in the psychiatric care system to the public’s attention—a topic that is among the Institution’s priorities.
“As Ombudsman, I admit that I am biased toward this issue because it is one of the most painful ones I encounter in my work. Your report revealed a truth that has been discussed for years, with strategies being drafted and reforms promised, but the only thing that remains unchanged is the dire state of state-run psychiatric hospitals,” Delcheva pointed out.
