Ombudsman Velislava Delcheva and Plamen Dimitrov, President of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (KNSB), today signed a Memorandum of Cooperation, thereby laying the foundations for a closer partnership to protect citizens’ labour, social and trade union rights.

The Memorandum provides for joint action on reports and complaints regarding violations of workers’ and employees’ rights, the exchange of information and expertise, and a more effective institutional response to violations, administrative inaction or refusal to provide protection.

Key priorities of the partnership include the protection of the right to work, social security, healthy and safe working conditions, the right to organise and collective bargaining, equal treatment and protection against discrimination. The two parties will also work to identify systemic problems and draw up proposals for improving legislation.

Further joint campaigns, training sessions and public initiatives are planned to raise workers’ legal awareness and improve their understanding of the mechanisms for protecting their rights, including on the issues of harassment and violence in the workplace.

“Through this partnership, we are placing further emphasis on the effective protection of workers and on the need for institutions to respond promptly and effectively when their rights are violated,” the parties stated at the signing ceremony.
