Ombudsman Velislava Delcheva held an open lesson on civic education at Ivan Vazov Secondary School in Pomorie. The meeting was held at the invitation of the principal, Ms. Petya Kazakova, with the participation of students and principals from three schools: the hosts, Aleko Konstantinov Professional High School of Tourism, and Lyuben Karavelov Secondary School of Nessebar.
Velislava Delcheva presented to teachers and students the role and functions of the Ombudsman – what rights she protects, what her powers are, and in which cases she cannot intervene.
The students showed enthusiasm, maturity, and curiosity, asking a number of interesting questions. Topics from their everyday lives were also discussed – how they can improve their high school graduation exam results, what the rules are for using mobile phones at school, and why it is important for young people to freely express their opinions.
The Ombudsman also shared her personal experience, saying that when she applied for the position at one of the hearings in front of students, she was surprised by the lack of faith among young people that they could change society. "They often say, 'Nothing depends on me, let them do what they want.' But in fact, this is not the case – you are the future, tomorrow you will be in charge, and that is why you should take an interest in what is happening around you today," Delcheva emphasized.
She encouraged students to be leaders in their own lives by focusing on three key pillars—knowledge, self-confidence, and perseverance—and never give up on their goals.
In conclusion, Delcheva said that she would continue her meetings with students across the country because real challenges and solutions were best seen through personal conversation and contact.
